Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote – Michigan is a non-partisan organization that serves the Asian Pacific Islander American community through civic participation, advocacy, and education.

Position Summary

APIAVote-MI seeks an enthusiastic, experienced and visionary leader to serve as the first full-time Executive Director of the only Pan-Asian American grassroots advocacy organization in the state of Michigan. Our ideal candidate will be committed to leading the transformation and growth of the organization and will bring a forward-thinking approach to organizational and program development, particularly through a lens of racial equity and transformative justice. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors to further develop and implement the mission and the strategic plan of the organization. The Executive Director will also establish and strengthen key local and national partnerships and promote solidarity among the APIA community.


  • Leadership

Design and implement a strategic plan and advocacy agenda in collaboration with the Board of Directors.

Manage and administer day-to-day operations of the organization.

Assist with hiring, managing and evaluating staff and contractors; provide supervision, support and coaching.

Develop and formalize procedural documents and organizational practices.

Assist with the cultivation and development of the Board of Directors.

Monitor and respond to local and statewide actions that pertain to the APIA community.

  • Fund Development

Develop, manage and monitor organization’s fundraising plan, including prospecting and maintaining relationships with funders; provide oversight including coordination of various grant budgets and required reporting.

Develop, manage and monitor organization’s financial management system; work with Board Treasurer to ensure compliance with financial policies and practices.

Build and maintain a donor database for ongoing follow-up.

Develop a grassroots fundraising strategy that increases membership and a strong individual donor base.

  • Programming

Design, implement and sustain evidence-based programming that advances the mission of APIAVote-Michigan.

Establish and implement evaluation plan including development of metrics and outcomes; integrate community participatory evaluation methods when possible.

Design and implement field plans for electoral organizing including voter registration, voter education, get out the vote efforts, election protection, and monitoring voter suppression legislation.

Identify policy strategies and design campaigns around the major findings from our Needs Assessment Report.

Assist with all other tasks and projects as directed by the Board of Directors.

  • External Relations

Serve as a spokesperson for the organization by interfacing with mainstream and ethnic media and by representing our organization at local and national events.

Design and manage our media portfolio to increase our organization’s visibility in online and traditional platforms.

Build coalitions and partnerships with key stakeholders both within and outside of the APIA community and with policymakers and administrators in order to advance key initiatives and issues.

Participate in task forces, collaborative, national convening, committees, and community events to advance APIAVote-MI’s mission.


Five or more years of nonprofit leadership experience, including successful grant writing, voter engagement, and program implementation.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; Master’s degree in relevant field (Social Work, Public Policy, etc.) preferred.

Excellent oral and written communication skills; facilitation; and interpersonal, conflict resolution skills.

Experience working with the Southeast Michigan APIA community.

Demonstrated commitment to social justice and diversity, particularly through a lens of racial equity and transformative justice.

Familiarity with and knowledge of organizational and program development.

Knowledge of policy advocacy strategies preferred.

Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed and applicant must have reliable transportation.

Fluency in one or more Asian languages preferred.

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience. This is a full time position. The ideal candidate will be committed to serving in this position for at least 3 years to ensure organizational sustainability.
